Self Promotion - Acting and Modeling

ActingHaving an agent is not a guarantee that you'll get work. Many actors get lazy once they are represented by an agent thinking that they don't have to lift a finger anymore and the is just gonna come at them. In reality, to make it big you have to hustle search for work on your own as well.

The internet is a great tool for finding auditions to go to, or participate in forums with other actors/models. Find online sites that post jobs related to your craft and try to squeeze your way into them as a day job. Smaller jobs in show business can lead you to very big things. So don't forget that working as a receptionist, script reader, film crew can get you noticed.

Networking is key to every business, especially in entertainment. It's all about who you know, so whenever you meet someone exchange business cards or information. Even if your not in a the union, you can network with fellow actors who are in the same boat as you. Surely they will hear about auditions that you don't know about and vice versa. This way you can inform each other of these opportunities and advance in your career.

Casting CallsYou can also find your own work by submitting your headshot and resume to casting directors. The best way to reach casting directors is to mail them, send your best photo along with a perfect resume so they will remember you.

Ask for if it is possible to meet with them for a interview. If that casting director is known to cast specific areas like comedies, write a cover letter that will make them get a little laugh out of it.

Sending mailing to casting directors might take a long time to hear back. In addition to that, try stopping by the casting directors' office. Politely ask if the casting director has a minute just so you can introduce yourself and let them know what you're interested in.

Don't take up too much of their time, be brief, and if you're asked to leave, then do so politely. You don't want to be annoying, the casting director will remember you for that and won't give you any work.

Acting SuccessIf you get the chance to meet with the casting director, take this short amount of time and let the him/her know who you are and what your capabilities of an actor are. They might not hire you for a role on the spot, but by doing this your setting yourself up for the future and they may find something that will work for you later.

When you get cast for a role, make sure to write a thank-you note and a small gift to the casting director to show that you appreciate what he/she did for you. Periodically, call or email the casting directors that have cast you for parts to let him/her know of your latest acting roles. This way they will remember your face and just might call you for any future projects.
